Homestay accommodation is a chance for the student to become part of an Irish family during their stay in Cork. All our host families have been selected and visited by our representative and they are made aware of our student’s physical and emotional needs. Most host families are based in the suburbs, between 2-3km from the city centre. The maximum journey by bus is 15-20 minutes. As such, our homes are selected on the basis of a friendly atmosphere, good food and clean comfortable surroundings. Companions/spouses cannot be accommodated in the homestay unless they are attending a course. Standard: This type of accommodation is arranged on a half board basis from Monday to Friday and full board at the weekends. We ensure that unless otherwise requested there will be only one student of the same mother tongue in the same household. The benefit of this is that the student will gain fluency in all types of interaction within the home. Homestay accommodation includes:
~ Single or twin room with adequate space for storing clothing.
~ Sufficient bed linen that is changed weekly.
~ A study area within the house.

Student Information

Day one

Students should arrive at the centre no later than 08.45
Placement Test and Orientation Session (09.00 - 10.50)
Our curriculum is based on a combination of language structures functions and vocabulary graded according to level. In addition, classroom activities are carefully balanced throughout the day to ensure systematic development of the four skills (speaking, reading, listening and writing). We have an extensive range of resources from which to select the most appropriate materials for use in a particular class.
Our fully qualified and experienced language trainers are expert in adapting recourses and teaching methods to suit the specific interests and requirements of individual students.
During the orientation session, the students are welcomed to Cork and to the school. They are familiarised with the timetable and the programme of activities, the layout of the building and the facilities provided. Following the placement test, students are then assigned to a class with students of similar English Language ability and requirements.

Methodology

In addition to our library of resources , extensive use is made of authentic material including video, television and radio recordings, newspapers and magazine articles and so on. In this way, students are encouraged to become familiar with the ways English is used in day-to-day life. As many students are anxious to improve their spoken English, there is a strong emphasis on development of oral fluency. Teachers use role-play, group and pair work, drama, debate and discussion to give students maximum opportunity to speak English.
Homework assignments and supervised self-study allow students to develop their skills outside the classroom.
Student progress is monitored throughout the course and there are frequent opportunities for students to give both written and verbal feedback. Each student receives a final report and certificate on completion of their course.
